Notes for: Rebecca Jane Furner

When she was six months of age, her parents (not identified in her obituary) emigrated from Loudoun County, Virginia "to Harrison County, Virginia, now West Virginia, making the entire trip across the mountains to their new home carrying all their earthly possessions on horseback. ... Her early life was spent in instructing the youths of Harrison County, having devoted twenty-five years to teaching." Upon her marriage in 1883, she moved to Camp Run, Doddridge Co, where she lived the remainder of her life. "She had no children of her own, but was a mother to two of her step-grandsons, who she took almost in their infancy and reared to manhood. ... She has been an invalid for a number of years and helpless for he last six months of her life. While stricken with paralysis, suffering continuously, she never complained of her physical situation but was cheerful and expressed herself as sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust ...."

1920 Census, Doddridge County, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Jan 16 1920:
Head of household: Rebecca J. Gaston, 79, widowed, b. Virginia, both parents b. Maryland; the only other member of the household was listed as a servant, Elizabeth J. Woofter, 64, married, b. W.Va, both parents b. W.Va. (Elizabeth was the niece of Rebecca's late husband.)
