- 1900 Census. Tyler Co, WV (Centerville District), enumerated on Jun 30 1900:
Ella George, 39, b. Mar 1861, farmer, widowed (corrected from initial entry of married for 6 years), mother of 3 children (all still living); dau Ingiby Lipscom [sic], 18, b. Feb 1882, single; son Homer George, 4, b. Feb 1896; son Ralph George, 2, b. De 1897.
NOTE: A week after this enumeration, daughter Ingaby married Joseph A. Costilow. Ella's marital status should have been entered as separated or divorced, as reflected in her ex-husband's entry for this census. He was enumerated in a separate household Centerville District. His marital status was divorced and with him were his children from his first marriage.

Thomas L. George, 39, b. Jul 1860, divorced (corrected from married 15 yrs), occupation (blank); son Earl W, 12, b. Aug 1887; dau Lucy, 11, b. Dec 1888; dau Lora, 10, b. Nov 1889; dau Lessie, 8, b. Sep 1891; dau Liva, 6, b. Oct 1893.
In 1906, Mary Ellen "Ella" George remarried John W. Payne, giving her marital status as divorced. Meanwhile, her ex-husband Thomas L. George had remarried Ellen "Ella" Birch (widow of Noah Clice) in 1904.
1910 Census, Harrison Co, WV (Town of Salem), enumerated on Apr 29 1910 on Water Street:
Ella Payne, 54, occupation agent for books, married 4 yrs (2nd marriage), mother of 5 children (2 still living); Homer George, 14; son Ralph George, 12.
NOTE: There are several discrepancies in the information provided for Ella. Her age is understated by about two years, she was in her third marriage rather than her second, and she had more than two living children. It is also noteworthy that although she was indicated as being married, her husband was not present.
1920 Census, Harrison Co, WV (Tenmile District, City of Salem), enumerated on Jan 14 1920:
Ella George, 5_ (2nd digit not visible), widowed, no occupation; son Homer George, 23, single, clerk; son Ralph George, 21, single, bookkeeper.
1930 Census, Wood Co, WV (City of Parkersburg), enumerated on Apr 11 1930 at 1115 Avery Street:
Ralph E. George, 32, clerk at rayon plant, monthly rent $25, no radio in home; wife Margaret M, 27; dau Betty A, 1y 3m, dau Alice M, 5; mother Ella George, 61, widowed. All born in West Virginia except Margaret, born in Ohio.
