Identified as James William Powell, widower, farmer, born Apr 13 1849 in Harrison Co, son of Stephen Powell & Eliza Floyd; died Dec 23 1924 at Long Run, Grant District, Doddridge County, age 75y 8m 10d, cause of death gunshot wound, burial at IOOF Cemetery in West Union. Informant: Alfred Powell, Long Run. (Note: Mother's name is incorrectly given as her re-married name Floyd, rather than her maiden name Coplin. Based on newspaper accounts, James Powell's death resulted from an armed attack by three men, Ralph C. Richards, Roscoe M. Cross and Samuel Elliott. They were charged with murder and tried in Doddridge County. Their convictions resulted in sentences at the WV State Penitentiary in Moundsville, where all three were found in the 1930 Census. What provoked the attack is not clear. Roscoe Cross and Ralph Richards were first cousins; Samuel Elliott was married to Cross' sister.)
