- Serving aboard the destroyer USS Smalley (DD-565), James B. Cupp was a radio repairman's helper, responsible for ordering all ship board electronic parts, plus storage of parts. He served in the Korean Combat Zone with Task Force 77, for which he was awarded a Battle Star. Other destinations included Hong Kong, Singapore, Ceylon, Saudi Arabia, Aden, Port Said, Paraeus, Cannes, Gibralter, Spain, Turkey, Denmark, Finland, England, Persian Gulf, Sierra Leone, Guantanamo Cuba, Caribbean Islands, Japan, Germany, France, Bermuda, Midway Islands, Suez Canal, Panama Canal, San Diego CA, and home port Newport, Rhode Island. Medals awarded included National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service, United Nations Service, and Navy Occupation Service with European Clasp.
