    • According to U.S. Army Transport Service Passenger Lists, Daniel Arden Rollins was transported to France aboard the ship P. Matoika, departing from Norfolk, Virginia on Aug 22 1918. At that time he was a Private in the 59th Provisional Company August Infantry Replacement Draft (White). His next of kin was listed as his father, Arden K. Rollins.

The family of Pvt. Daniel A. Rollins shared with the local newspaper a letter that he wrote to them from France several weeks after the end of World War I. It was printed in the "Doddrige County Republican" on Jan 16 1919 and is provided here in its entirety:

      France,
      Dec. 17, 1918
      Mrs. A. K. Rollins,
      West Union, W.Va.
      Dear Mother:
Will now try and answer your letters to let you know that I am well and hope you are all the same. They were the ones you wrote me the 24th and 27th of Nov., and I was certainly glad to get them and to hear that you were all well. I got your letters on the 13th of Dec. They were only about 15 days coming. There has been lots I never got and don't suppose I ever will. I hope you are getting your mail better than you did.
We are located in a nice place. We are near Nevy Chateau and still have our prisoners, but I don't think we will have them much longer.
We are rebuilding the roads here now. They certainly have fine roads here.
Tell Charlie he will have to catch several rabbits to pay for his finger and that he can't rabbit hunt with his brother. Suppose Pop and Uncle Wilmer are having some time this winter. But I pity the cooks.
Mom, have you ever yeard from Lin Gain or any of the other boys? I haven't heard from any of them, only what you wrote me.
Suppose you all are going to have sometime Xmas. This will be the first Xmas that I have missed being a fox chasing for several years. I think I will spend Xmas with Lester Zinn if I can get a pass. What is Dick working at this winter? Tell them I said hello. Is the glass factory running this winter?
I suppose you are all anxious to know when I am coming home. I am just as anxious as you are, but I can not tell you when. But don't think any of us will be here long. I have seen about all of France that I care about seeing. We landed in Brest and in Nevy Chateau; so you can see I have seen some of France. I sent a box of souvenirs the 15th; don't know if you will ever get it or not. I haven't received the one you sent me yet. I am looking for it any time. Some of the boys have already got theirs.
Well, I will have to close and go on guard at 3 p.m. Tell everyone hello and give my Love and Best Wishes to all.
      From your loving son,
      Arden
