- News item, "Clarksburg Telegram," Friday, Aug 20 1897, reprinted from the "West Union Record":
"There was quite an excitement here Wednesday over the elopement of Lulu, the 17-year old daughter of Ai Drain, and Alvin Smith, son of Harmond Smith, of Kenton. A friend was on hand with constable Gain when the 1:05 train pulled in, but failed to produce a warrant, the boy and his friends in the presence of 150 people snatched the girl from the officer and placed her on the train amid the cheers of the multitude. They tried to head them off at Grafton, but they were smart enough to get off at Clarksburg where they got a team and started for Maryland, where they have no doubt been made one before this time."
