    "Wm. Gray Seriously Injured"
    "Wm. Gray, a B & O trackman residing at Central station, was seriously, perhaps fatally, injured at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday morning at the Summit, west of Central.
    "With the other track boys he was riding the hand car to work, when he was attacked with a sudden illness and fell in front of the car, which could not be stopped before it ran up on the unfortunate man.
    "One rib was broken, two others fractured, he sustained several bad cuts and bruises, and may be injured internally.
    "The poor fellow was taken to his home at Central, friends assisted in every way they could, and Dr. McGovern was called to render medical attention.
    "Mr. Gray is an industrious, hard working man who has had much bad luck recently, and he has the sympathy of the entire community in this his latest affliction."

    "The History of Doddridge County," p. 154, gives Nancy Watson Gray's death date as Apr 18 1888, rather than the Apr 18 1881 on her headstone. Also, the age at death appearing on her headstone, 72y 4m 24d, would put her birth date as Nov 25 1808, rather than the Nov 24 1809 given in the same Doddridge County History article. The age for both her and her husband in the 1850 Census, enumerated on Jul 22 1850, was 41. No death record has been found.

    Joseph Sherwood was residing in present-day Doddridge County (then Harrison County) as early as 1838, as his signature appears on a legislative petition for the formation of a new county. Additionally, according to an 1833 map containing the location of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th Western Sections of the North Western Turnpike, the Sherwood family was already living then in present-day Doddridge County. The map is on file at the Library of Virginia, Board of Public Works division.

    We have found no record of Joseph Sherwood after the 1860 Census, or of his wife Mary after the 1880 Census. Based largely on headstones at a cemetery in Buchanan Co, Missouri, some researchers report that this Joseph Sherwood was born Aug 2 1794 and died Mar 28 1863 in Missouri, and that his wife was Margery (b. Sep 24 1798, d. Jan 24 1859). We believe this to be incorrect, as it is contradicted by the foregoing census records.
