    Samuel Morris Gaston and his brother John Smith Gaston left Harrison Co, WV in early 1847 and moved to Doddridge County. They bought property from their cousins, John Hugh, Eli and Daniel Gaston, who had come to Doddridge a few years before. They cleared land and built their homes on Camp Run, near Oxford.

    William Law came to America in 1794. His first wife was Mary Burnside, with whom he had six children: William Jr., Thomas, John, Isaac, Frank, and Mary (married Rev George Collins). The reported March 1803 and April 1803 birth dates of sons William Jr. and John are based on their headstones, but are clearly in conflict.

    After Mary's death, William married Hannah Sill(s), who bore him seven more children: David, Asby Poole (married Deborah Gaston), Asa, Jesse, Elizabeth (married Samuel Morris Gaston), Ruhama (married Jefferson Law), Ellen (married James Hutson).

    John Gaston, Jr. and his wife, Anna Davisson, came to Duck Creek, Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1796. Anna's sister Elizabeth and her husband, Watters Smith, also came to Duck Creek at the same time and bought land there. John Gaston, Jr. served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. John Covenhoven's (aka Jon Cowenhoven) Company, Col. Samuel Forman's 2nd Regiment, of the Monmouth County NJ Militia. New Jersey Department of Defense records show him as a Sergeant as of Jul-1-1780.
