Established the first post office in New Milton, which he named after the community of Milton, Wisconsin, where he had resided for about one year before returning to Doddridge County. Many researchers consider it likely that Jepthah Fitz Randolph was active in the underground railroad, the design of his home and its location near the Salem-Harrisville Turnpike lending credence to such speculation.

According to Susie Davis Nicholson (p. 65), the home of Jepthah Fitz Randolph was built from native clay taken from a nearby field. This is fire brick, so a kiln had to be built to fire the brick. The home was occupied by Jeptha Randolph and his descendants until the death of his great-grandaughter, Blonda McClain Groah, on Dec 18, 1968. When her estate was settled, the property was sold to a person unrelated to the family. After the death of Jeptha, the home had gone to the youngest son, Alvin, who as of 1979 had no living descendants.

    Notes:

"Elias Lowther became a surveyor in early life, and when Wood County was formed, he was appointed by the surveyors of both Wood and Harrison to survey the line between the two counties. He was also a deputy surveyor for Wood County and a Justice of the Peace. It is evident that he lived in Wood County for a few years, as did his brother Jesse Lowther and their father, but they all returned to West Milford in Harrison County. Elias Lowther "was at one time a member of the Richmond Legislature from Harrison county, and was major in the militia. During the latter part of his life he lost his mind, and his last years were spent in the insane hospital at Staunton, Virginia, where he was laid to rest near the year 1845."

In Harrison County Chancery case No. 83, File 9, Lewis Maxwell vs. Jonathan Howell, regarding a land dispute, Elias Lowther made the following statement on Oct 13 1840 while at the house of fellow surveyor Minter Bailey in Weston:
"The platt beginning at the Willow Island on Middle Island Creek extending up the same containing twenty lots and marked on the back Lewis Maxwell vs Howell and much defaced by mould is the same made out by me for Nathan Davis & J. Howell and others perhaps about the year 1823...I am well assured the dates and figures are my own marks."

Johnathan Randolph, 75, b. NJ, farmer, value of real estate $2000; Mary Randolph, 68, b. NJ; Nancy Strawther, 15, b. Va.
(NOTE: Nancy C. Strother was the daughter of James M. Strother and Rachel F. Randolph. She married Flavius Josephus Ashburn in 1852.)

    Birth:
"Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV" reports conflicting birth and death dates for Jonathan Fitz Randolph. On page 31, the dates b. Mar 20 1778 and d. Mar 8 1857 are given, while on page 354 the dates are b. Mar 20 1775 and d. Mar 8 1853. A Sons of the American Revolution application in 1926 stated the 1775-1853 dates. On that basis, and since the 1775 birth date was given in the Davis book as part of a sequential listing of Jonathan and his siblings, the 1775 birth date does appear to have more credence. The 1775 date also conforms to his age at death and age in the 1850 Census. As for his date of death, Jonathan's death record in Harrison County (not New Milton, Doddridge County, as given in the SAR application) clearly shows his date of death as Mar 9 (sic) 1853.

After settling in Harrison County in 1773, Col. William Lowther figured in the building of Simpson's fort, about eight miles below Clarksburg, and West's fort, near Jane Lew. He played an important part, too, in the construction of the "Old Nutter" fort, near Clarksburg, ruins of which still mark the site. He soon became distinguished for his fearlessness as a frontiersman, and for his unselfish devotion to the welfare of the colonists. He was one of the most capable defenders of the settlement in the war of 1774, and later, and he led many successful expeditions against the enemy. He was the first Justice of the Peace in the district of West Augusta; the first Sheriff of Harrison and Wood Counties; and was at one time a member of the General Assembly at Richmond, Virginia. Having served in all the subordinate ranks of military life, he rose to that of Colonel. His military record was such as to admit his descendants to membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

  16. 59.  Elizabeth JOHNSTON was born 11 Jul 1762, Shrewsbury, Monmouth Co, NJ (daughter of Elisha JOHNSTON and Catherine MITCHELL); died 6 Jan 1845; was buried , Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery, Salem, Harrison Co, WV.

    Notes:

In 1794 John P. Duvall of Mason, Kentucky sold to John Davis (1754-1842) of Harrison County, Virginia 500 acres on Middle Island Creek in Ohio County, Virginia for 500 pounds. This land adjoined John P. Duvall's resident right which he had obtained from Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 15,345, dated April 2, 1783. On December 11, 1797, John Davis of Harrison County, Virginia sold to his brother William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis of Ohio County, Virginia for 100 pounds the same 500 acres he had purchased from John P. Duvall in 1794 [Harrison County Deed Book 3, p. 264].

On June 17, 1805, William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis sold to his son Peter Davis (1783-1873) for 100 dollars 60 acres described as "on Middle Island Creek, corner of John P. Duvall's resident right" [Harrison County Deed Book 5, Page 522]. Given this description, it is clear that these 60 acres were part of the 500 acres originally purchased from John P. Duvall.

On August 15, 1809, Peter Davis sold those 60 acres to his brother George J. Davis [Harrison County Deed Book 8, p. 258]. On November 9, 1827, George J. & Catherine (Davis) Davis sold to William Fitz Randolph those same 60 acres plus 16 additional adjoining acres previously owned by John & Esther (Davis) Hutson.

Based on the foregoing land transactions, we know with certainty that William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis was living on Greenbrier Run in present-day Doddridge County in 1797 when he purchased the 500 acres from his brother John Davis. The provenance of that land was from John P. Duvall to John Davis, to his brother William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis, to his son Peter Davis, to his brother George J. Davis, and then to William Fitz Randolph, (1800-1861) whose two-story brick home is still standing on Greenbrier Run.

William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis and his wife Elizabeth died on the same day.
