News item in "West Union Record," Friday, Dec 18 1914:
"The County court convened on Monday, and the trial of Hezekiah Meek, the aged citizen who wishes to commit matrimony, is now involving its attention and attracting wide interest. Mr. Meek is 87 years of age, and in taking a bride he wishes 'on thee to bestow all my goods,' and the children object to this; hence the effort to restrain him. The family are said to be a highly respected one, and they naturally feel that such a proceeding is not only unfair to the father, but unjust to them. So the outcome will be awaited with much interest.
Berk S. Strathers, of Weston, is the lawyer for the prosecution, and J. V. Blair and A. F. McCue for the defense."

News item in "West Union Record," Friday, Dec 25 1914:
"The Hezekiah Meek case, which was before the county court last week, was dismissed. Mr. Meek, though eighty-seven years of age, is still active and appears much younger, and doubtless the account of his marriage will soon add interest to our columns."

News item of Circuit Court proceedings, "Doddridge County Republican," Thursday, July 29 1915:
"M. A. Meek, plaintiff, vs. Hezekiah Meek, defendant, upon petition to inquire into the condition of the mind of the defendant, and to appoint a committee for him. Drs. A. Poole and E. T. Wetzel were examined and stated that they found nothing indicating insanity in the said Hezekiah Meek and the court being of the opinion that the evidence fails to sustain the allegation of plaintiff's said petition doth find for the defendant that he is sane and discharged him from further inquiry, and also ordered that M. A. Meek pay the costs incurred by him in this proceeding, including sheriff's, clerk's, stenographer's and physicians fee, for which the defendant may have execution."

    Census:
In 1860, in home of daughter Rebecca Willard Brown

    Notes:

1830 Census, Harrison County (Western District), Virginia (now West Virginia):
George Willard - head of household
1 male 20-29 George Willard (age discrepancy)
1 female under 5 Margaret Willard (born 1827)
    1 female 5-9 Unidentified daughter *
1 female 30-39 Sudna Lowther Willard (born 1792)

    * It has been postulated that Sudna Lowther may have had a child prior to her 1827 marriage to George Willard, which would account for the older daughter in this enumeration. Circumstantially, it is quite possible that the unidentified daughter is Rulina Lowther, b. 1825 in Harrison County, who married Eli Morris Gaston in 1846. In July 2020, DNA testing showed a 4th-to-6th cousin relationship between the 6th-great-granddaughter of Col. William Lowther (b. 1742, grandfather of Sudna) and the 3rd-great-grandson of Rulina Lowther, whose parentage at that time was not known. Placing Rulina Lowther as the daughter of Sudna, the actual relationship is as predicted by the DNA testing, 6th cousins once removed.

After her husband's early death, Sudna Lowther Willard moved to Ritchie County and lived with her parents. She and her three Willard daughters are accounted for in the 1840 Census of Williams Lowther's household, and older daughter Rulina Lowther is likely also in the census of that household.

1850 Census, Ritchie Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Sep 5 1850:
    Sudna Willard, 58; Margaret E, 23; Charlotte, 16.

In 1860 and 1870, Sudna Willard was in the household of her daughter, Rebecca (Willard) Brown, in Ritchie County.

    Notes:

In 1794 John P. Duvall of Mason, Kentucky sold to John Davis (1754-1842) of Harrison County, Virginia 500 acres on Middle Island Creek in Ohio County, Virginia for 500 pounds. This land adjoined John P. Duvall's resident right which he had obtained from Land Office Treasury Warrant No. 15,345, dated April 2, 1783. On December 11, 1797, John Davis of Harrison County, Virginia sold to his brother William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis of Ohio County, Virginia for 100 pounds the same 500 acres he had purchased from John P. Duvall in 1794 [Harrison County Deed Book 3, p. 264].

On June 17, 1805, William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis sold to his son Peter Davis (1783-1873) for 100 dollars 60 acres described as "on Middle Island Creek, corner of John P. Duvall's resident right" [Harrison County Deed Book 5, Page 522]. Given this description, it is clear that these 60 acres were part of the 500 acres originally purchased from John P. Duvall.

On August 15, 1809, Peter Davis sold those 60 acres to his brother George J. Davis [Harrison County Deed Book 8, p. 258]. On November 9, 1827, George J. & Catherine (Davis) Davis sold to William Fitz Randolph those same 60 acres plus 16 additional adjoining acres previously owned by John & Esther (Davis) Hutson.

Based on the foregoing land transactions, we know with certainty that William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis was living on Greenbrier Run in present-day Doddridge County in 1797 when he purchased the 500 acres from his brother John Davis. The provenance of that land was from John P. Duvall to John Davis, to his brother William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis, to his son Peter Davis, to his brother George J. Davis, and then to William Fitz Randolph, (1800-1861) whose two-story brick home is still standing on Greenbrier Run.

William "Greenbrier Billy" Davis and his wife Elizabeth died on the same day.

    • Census: 1810, Monongalia Co, (W)VA

    Notes:

Thomas Pritchard's ancestors came from England and settled at Jamestown in about 1610. His brother, John Pritchard, saw three years of service as a soldier in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In about 1832, Thomas Pritchard came from The Glades in Preston County and built the first mill on the South Fork of Hughes River, below Oxford, making the first settlement in that area. A certain Henry O. Middleton had given him one hundred acres of land in that wilderness as inducement to settle and to erect a saw and grist mill.

    Notes:

"Nancy Tichenell, first wife of Thomas Pritchard Jr., was descended from a prominent New Jersey family, most of whom retained the original spelling of Tichenor. Beginning with Nancy's father Moses, a Revolutionary War soldier, the spelling went awry, and his descendants used a variety of forms, most ending with 'L'."
Nancy Tichenell (Titchenell, Tichnell, Tichenal) died before Oct 25 1812 (the date of husband Thomas Pritchard's remarriage to Mary Moody) in what is now Preston Co, WV. Nancy and Thomas had seven or eight children. Some genealogists believe that his daughter Mary was actually the daughter of Mary Moody. Because his daughter Elizabeth was born Feb 20 1812, it is quite likely that Nancy died at the time of that birth, a common event in pioneer families. Mary's given name is another clue.
"Two weeks after their marriage in Allegany County, Maryland, Thomas became the guardian of Nancy's younger siblings, Stephen Tickenal (sic), Margaret Tickenal, and Jain (Jane) Tichenal, orphan children of Moses Tickenal, all of that county."

    Notes:

1840 Census, Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia):
William Lowther - head of household
    1 male 70-79 (William)
    2 females 5-9 (Charlotte & Rebecca Willard)
    1 female 10-14 (Margaret Willard)
    1 female 20-29 (Rulina? See note *)
1 female 40-49 (Sudna Lowther Willard)
    1 female 70-79 (Margaret)
    * NOTE: The above identification of household members is highly speculative. While the presence of William and Margaret is clear, and the presence of their widowed daughter Sudna and her three daughters is very likely, the identification of the 20-29 year-old female is problematic. She would not have been Mary or Sarah, who both "died young" and would have been 40-43 even if still living. More likely would be Sudna's presumed fourth daughter, Rulina, who is believed also to have been with her in 1830. Born in 1825 prior to Sudna's marriage, Rulina would have been a little younger than indicated, but she is not accounted for elsewhere and it is reasonable to believe that she was still with her mother.

Conflicting information regarding Margaret Morrison, the wife of William Lowther, has been reported by numerous researchers. Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County," pp. 12-14, reports that Margaret Morrison was born in North Carolina, one of several children of Archibald Morrison (a native of England) and a Miss Fooks. Along the same lines, an a 1908 application to Sons of the American Revolution (Member No. 20361) identifies the applicant's great-great-grandparents as William Lowther Jr, of Harrison Co Va, and Margaret Morrison, of North Carolina. But Don Norman's "Descendants of Robert Lowther" reports her parents as Alexander Morrison and Mary Lowther (dau of Robert Lowther & Aquilla Reese). The same parentage is reported by Jane Lowther Bolster in "The Families of Jesse Lowther and His Son Granville, with Their Descendants and Antecedents in America," p. 25. Linder's "Gibson and Related Families," pp. 400-401, also shows her to be the daughter of Alexander Morrison and Mary Lowther of Harrison County, but then on p. 429 identifies her parents as Archibald & ___ (Fooks) Morrison.

While neither Norman nor Bolster nor Linder cite specific sources, the information reported by Minnie Kendall Lowther does have a credible basis. Not only was she a reputable researcher in local history and genealogy, but she was also the great-granddaughter of this couple, William Lowther and Margaret Morrison, and she was in possession of their family Bible. From research or personal experience, she reported as follows:

"Near the year 1789, he (William Lowther) was married to Miss Margaret Morrison, who was born on the banks of the Yadkin river, in North Carolina, on May 1, 1768, and with her parents emigrated to Harrison county in her early womanhood. After their marriage, they settled near one mile below West Milford, on the farm that is now owned by the Highlands. Here they reared their family, and here they remained until near the year 1837, when they came to this county, where they spent the evening hours of their lives with their son, Archibald Lowther, at Holbrook. ... Mrs. Lowther was a woman of devout religious character, a Presbyterian in faith, and her old Bible, which was her daily companion, is now in the hands of the writer. It bears the date of "1790", and is still held together by the old leather string that she ever kept about it."

It is on this basis that we report this family as we have.
