       1850 Census, Barbour County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Sep 18 1850:

       Jacob Watson, 63, farmer; Sarah, 57; Angeline, 24; Jane, 22; Wilson, 20; Emily, 18; John, 15.  All born in Virginia.

 

       He married2 (1) Elizabeth Gandy, (daughter of ___ Gandy) resided (moved, ca 1812) in Barbour Co, (W)VA,[3] resided originally in Marion Co, (W)VA.3  He married2 (2) Sarah Pritchard, b. ca 1797 in Allegheny Co, PA,[4],[5] [but 1850 Census puts birth at about 1793 in Virginia], (daughter of Thomas Pritchard, Jr. and Nancy Tichenell) resided in Auburn, Ritchie Co, WV,[6] census 1860 in Ritchie Co, (W)VA,4 [residing with son John], census 1850 in Barbour Co, (W)VA.

3.    Mary "Polly"2 Watson, (1.Jacob1) b. ca 1817 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[21] buried in Spring Creek Cemetery, Roane Co, WV.[22],[23]  She married 1836 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[24],[25],[26] John Jett, Jr., b. 1813 in Franklin Co, VA,22 [Edna Pokorny has birth at 1812 in Barbour Co, VA.], (son of John Jett and Sarah Smith) buried in Spring Creek Cemetery, Roane Co, WV,22 resided 1860 in Ritchie Co, (W)VA.4  John: At the age of seven, moved with his parents to Barbour County, where they purchased a farm.  In 1849, he and his wife moved to Ritchie County, where they lived until 1875, moving then to Roane County, WV.  They had ten children, three of whom died in childhood.22

4.    William M.2 Watson, (1.Jacob1) b. ca 1818 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[27],[28],11,[29] d. Feb- 9-1890 in Roane Co, WV,[30],29 buried in Hebron Memorial Church Cemetery, Roane Co, WV,29,[31],[32] resided in Roane Co, WV.2  There is some question as to the date and place of birth of this William M. Watson.  Age given for the 1870 Census would put birth ca 1819.  Age 53 given at time of his second marriage, in Sep 1871, would put birth ca 1818.  Age 72 given at the time of his death in Feb 1890 would put birth ca 1817 or 1818.  His place of birth is given as Harrison County in the record of his second marriage, but as Mercer County in his death record.  Harrison County would seem more likely. He married[33],[34] (1) Oct-22-1840 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[35] Nancy Nutter, b. Feb-22-1818 in Barbour Co, (W)VA,[36],[37] [Don Norman reports birth date as 1820.], (daughter of Andrew Nutter and Malinda Willis) d. Jun-29-1869 in Doddridge Co, WV.[38],[39],[40]  Nancy: Some researchers report the parents of Nancy Nutter, the wife of William Watson, as James Nutter (1773-1833) and Julia Ann Davisson (1775-1826), a relationship that is at variance with substantiated facts about her.  Nancy Nutter Watson's death record in Doddridge Co states that she was born in Barbour Co, (W)VA, the daughter of "A. Nutter."  While Barbour Co is inconsistent with the reported birthplaces (Harrison and Doddridge Counties) of her siblings and may be incorrect, we do know that her husband William Watson's family had resided for some time in Barbour Co, and that her two oldest children were also born in Barbour Co.  As far as can be determined, James Nutter and Julia Ann Davisson spent their entire lives in Harrison Co and had no known Barbour Co connections.  Adding to the confusion is the Nutter genealogy compiled by Donald Norman, based on Barr Wilson's work, listing among the children of James Nutter & Julia Ann Davisson, and also of Andrew Nutter & Malinda Willis, a daughter named Nancy who married a William Watson.  That there would be two Nancy Nutters who married two William Watsons in that region and time frame seems very unlikely.  However, we do know that a Nancy Nutter married a William Watson in Harrison Co on Oct 22 1840 (or possibly Mar 4 1841, based on interpretation of the handwritten marriage record; a Marriage Bond was executed in Harrison County on Sep 1 1840 by Nancy Nutter's parents, Anda (sic) & Malinda Nutter, and also signed by her brother Willis Nutter and by Otha G. Watson, half-brother of William M. Watson).  But there is nothing in the marriage record itself (MR Bk 3, p. 145) reflecting the parentage or exact identity of either person, leaving open the possibility that it was a different Nancy Nutter, a different William Watson, or both.  Given all the evidence and circumstances, however, it was almost certainly this Nancy Nutter, daughter of Andrew Nutter & Malinda Willis.  No marriage record for either was found in Doddridge or Barbour Counties. He married (2) Sep-25-1871 in Doddridge Co, WV,[41],[42] Ellen Jane Stinespring, also known as Ella J. Stinespring,[43] b. May-31-1830 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,27,[44],[45] (daughter of John A. Stinespring and Mary ___) d. Aug-14-1914 in Auburn, Ritchie Co, WV.[46]  Ellen: 1900 Census of Doddridge County (Southwest District) shows Ellen J. Watson as a member of her son John Ervin Leggett's household, along with his wife and seven children.  She was listed as a widow, age 70, born May 1830, mother of 10 children, of which 2 were still living.
