1. James Leggett, b. in England.^[1]

James Leggett came from England before the American Revolution and settled in Rockingham County, Virginia, later moving to what is now Monongalia County, WV. It is not known whether he was soldier of the Continental Army, but he was a noted Indian fighter. Not long after moving to Monongalia County, he embarked on a journey eastward and was never heard from again. (History of Ritchie County, by Minnie Kendall Lowther, p. 337. But a notation regarding James Leggett's family inserted by the editors for the reprinting of that book states: "Some conflicting statements have confronted us in this data, but we have given it according to what we considered the best authority. One is that the original Leggett's name was Isaac, or John, instead of James.")¹

Resided in Marion County after marriage until moving to Slab Creek in Ritchie County, where he played an important part in the early affairs of the community. He was one of the charter members of the first church organization there, was the donor of the grounds for the church and cemetery, known as "Bethel" or "Old Slab," and was one of the principal factors in its erection. He later moved to the Harrisville vicinity, where his milling business was destroyed by fire in 1871, and later to Holbrook.¹⁸

The frame part of the house was built in 1890. He had to buy his farm back after going on the bond of a man he thought was his best friend. That took many years of hard work and put a great financial strain on the family.^[73]

"Thomas Jeffrey Davis gained his early education in the public schools of Harrisville, West Virginia, completing his public school education in Washington, D.C., and was thereafter graduated in Woods Commercial College in that city. He also attended Broaddus College, Clarksburg, West Virginia, and in 1900 he was graduated in the law department of the University of West Virginia. He received at this time the degree of Bachelor of Laws, and later he received the degree of Master of Laws from Columbia University, Washington, D.C. In 1901 he was admitted to the bar, and he has since been successfully engaged in the active practice of profession at Harrisville, save for the interval of his service as private secretary of the president of the Senate of the West Virginia Legislature. He was elected prosecuting attorney of Ritchie County in 1912, and that his administration has been specially efficient is indicated by the fact that in 1920 he was re-elected for a third consecutive term."
