Generation One

 

1.    James1 Leggett, b. in England.[1]  James Leggett came from England before the American Revolution and settled in Rockingham County, Virginia, later moving to what is now Monongalia County, WV.  It is not known whether he was soldier of the Continental Army, but he was a noted Indian fighter.  Not long after moving to Monongalia County, he embarked on a journey eastward and was never heard from again.  (History of Ritchie County, by Minnie Kendall Lowther, p. 337.  But a notation regarding James Leggett's family inserted by the editors for the reprinting of that book states:  "Some conflicting statements have confronted us in this data, but we have given it according to what we considered the best authority.  One is that the original Leggett's name was Isaac, or John, instead of James.")1.

Apr- 3-1883 near Oxford, Doddridge Co, WV,11,12 [Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County," p. 334, reports death date as 1886 near Oxford, while her "Ritchie County in History and Romance," p. 300, reports it as 1888.  But the Ritchie County Historical Society's "Ritchie County WV Cemeteries Through 1993" reports the headstone reading as Apr 3 1883.], buried in Pullman Cemetery, Ritchie Co, WV,4 occupation miller.12  Resided in Marion Co after marriage until moving to Slab Creek in Ritchie Co, where he played an important part in the early affairs of the community.  He was one of the charter members of the first church organization there, was the donor of the grounds for the church and cemetery, known as "Bethel" or "Old Slab," and was one of the principal factors in its erection.  He later moved to the Harrisville vicinity, where his milling business was destroyed by fire in 1871, and later to Holbrook.12 He married ca 1835,12 Sarah Ann Athey, also known as Sarah Ann Atha,[13] b. Watson as a member of her son John Ervin Leggett's household, along with his wife and seven children.  She was listed as a widow, age 70, born May 1830, mother of 10 children, of which 2 were still living.
