HUSK GENEALOGY
9/25/2008
Generation One
1. Frederick1 Husk, b. 17__, d. bef Jun 1848. "Frederick Husk (or Hust) apparently settled near the mouth of Dolls Run [in what is now the north central part of West Virginia]. In some old deeds, that stream is called Hust's Run, but the family long ago passed out of the community, and even the name applied to the stream did not stick. The last property passed out of the hands of the family June 6, 1846, when Elizabeth Husk, widow of Samuel Husk, and the other heirs, Frederick Husk and Nancy his wife, Isaac Husk and Jane his wife, George Britton and Mary his wife, Samuel Husk and Dorcas his wife, Horatio Britton and Elizabeth his wife, transferred 100 acres to Solomon Bowers." ["Chronicles of Core," 3rd Edition, by Earl L. Core, McClain Printing Company, Parsons, WV, 1975, p. 35]
A handwritten copy of a land grant, which is to Frederick Husk, October 9, 1781:

Given under our hands this 6th day of March in the 6th Year of the Commonwealth.
John Evans James Neal Charles Martin William Haymond Simon Troy
This certificate cannot be entered with the surveyor after the 26th day of October 1791.
Attested: John Hayle. Entered 9 October 1781."
[The Monongalia Story, Vol I, by Earl L. Core, McClain Printing Co, pp. 57, 159]
On Mar 14 1796, Frederick Husk was a member of the jury of inquest (the first meeting of the court after the records were burned that year). [The Monongalia Story, Vol. II, p. 256]
This is a genealogy of the descendants of this Frederick Husk (or Hust, or Hurst), with particular emphasis on those branches of the family tree closest to the principal compilers, Samuel David Gaston and Geneva Gaston Brown. The information presented here was obtained from countless sources over many years of research. Wherever possible, the original source is documented, but the reader can rest assured that even when a source is not specified, the compilers were highly confident of the accuracy of the information before including it in this collection.
Despite extensive research in more recent years, nothing about the ancestors of the elder Frederick Husk (or Hust) has been discovered. Information on the earliest of his descendants has also been very hard to come by. However, this genealogy is, and always will be, a work in progress, and additional information regarding the early generations, as well as the current one, will be added as it becomes known. In that vein, readers of this collection are invited to inform the compilers or editor of any errors or additional information for future updates. [Samuel David Gaston & Geneva Gaston Brown (1926-2001), principal compilers; R. L. Brown, editor]
He married Unknown.

Generation Two
2. Samuel2 Husk, (1.Frederick1) b. 17__ in Virginia,[1] d. bef Jun 1840.[2],[3] Samuel Husk predeceased his father, Frederick, who had died prior to June 1848. He married Elizabeth ___, b. ca 1785 in Pennsylvania, d. aft Jun 1846,3 census 1840 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA. Elizabeth: 1840 Census, Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia):

1 female, under 5
We have not been able to determine how this Harvey Husk fits in with the other Husks of this genealogy.

Generation Three
3. Frederick3 Husk, (2.Samuel2, 1.Frederick1) b. Sep- 7-1815 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA,[4],[5] [1850 Census states birthplace as Pennsylvania.], d. Mar- 5-1893 in Doddridge Co, WV,[6],[7] buried in Old family cem, Lick Run, New Milton, WV,[8] census 1860 in Doddridge Co, WV, census 1840, 1850 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA. He married[9] Apr-5-1838 in Morristown, PA, Nancy Ann Britton, also known as Ann Britton,9 b. 1814 in Virginia,[10] (daughter of Wilson Britton and Jane Wade) d. Jan- 8-1879 in Doddridge Co, WV.7 According to his great-grandson Brenton Leon Husk, Frederick Husk was born in Greene Co, PA in 1808. He moved to Doddridge Co in 1836, and died at Blandville, Doddridge Co, in 1883. Much of this is at variance with information obtained from other sources. We consider it likely that Brenton Husk's information regarding this Frederick Husk was in error, and we provide it here with that caveat.
1840 Census, Monongalia Co, (W)VA:
Census reported Frederick Husk as the head of family, age 20-30, with the other household members being one female age 20-30 (presumably wife Nancy) and one female age 60-70 (possibly mother-in-law Jane Wade Britton).
1860 Census, Doddridge Co, (W)VA:
Frederick Husk, male, 44, born in Virginia, farmer; Nancy, female, 46; G. W., male, 17; L., male, 14; J. W., male, 12; Joseph W., male, 10; William, male, 6; M. E., female, 3.

Nov-17-1864 in Civil War,[12] buried in Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, Burlington Co, NJ,12 census 1860 in Doddridge Co, WV, census 1850 in Monongalia Co, (W)VA. Died in Confederate prison in Civil War, per various sources. According to Brenton Leon Husk, George W. Husk belonged to Company A, 14th Infantry, and was taken prisoner at Cloyds Mountain, Virginia on May 9th, 1864. Much of this information is confirmed in "Soldiers' Memorial," published April 1865 and cited in the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram of Nov 24, 1999.
10. iii. Leander Wilson Husk b. 1846.
11. iv. John Wesley Husk b. Aug-18-1849.

4. Isaac3 Husk, (2.Samuel2, 1.Frederick1) b. Jan-12-1818 in Greene Co, PA [Son George Washington Husk's death record identifies his father's birthplace as Pennsylvania, and daughter Martha's death record states father's birthplace as Greene Co, PA. 1900 Census of Doddridge County states his birth date as March 1819.], d. 1902 near Summers, Doddridge Co, WV,[15],14 buried in Hart Cemetery, Taylor Drain Rd, Doddridge Co WV,[16] census 1900 in Doddridge Co, WV,[17] military Co C, 6th W. Va. Inf (Civil War).16 Military tombstone of Isaac Husk gives his unit as Company C, 6th W.Va. Infantry. Age at death given as 84. According to his grandson Howard Husk, he came to Doddridge Co WV from Brave (Wayne Twp, Greene Co), PA. He settled on a farm by the Harmony Church (Southwest District), where Howard Husk's father William Leonard Husk was born in April 1861.
. Partner not married Catherine Wright Evans. He married (2) Elizabeth Jane Critchfield, also known as Jane Critchfield,16,3,[18],[19] b. Mar-17-1825 in Greene Co, PA,16,[20] (daughter of John Critchfield, Sr. and Sarah Whitlatch) d. Feb-17-1890 in Doddridge Co, WV,16 buried in Hart Cemetery, Taylor Drain Rd, Doddridge Co WV.[21] Elizabeth: Some question exists as to her correct first name. Although widely believed to have been Sarah, evidence seems more to indicate Elizabeth. In either event, she was known almost exclusively only by her middle name, Jane. Her name was given as Jane in the 1870 Census, and even her headstone identifies her only as "Jane, wife of Isaac Husk." The death record of Isaac Newton Husk incorrectly lists his parents as Isaac Husk and Jane Whetlatch [sic], confusing his mother with his grandmother, Sarah Whitlatch.
1870 Census, Doddridge County WV (South West Township), enumerated on Sep 1 1870:
