1. Frederick Husk, b. 17__, d. bef Jun 1848.

"Frederick Husk (or Hust) apparently settled near the mouth of Dolls Run [in what is now the north central part of West Virginia]. In some old deeds, that stream is called Hust's Run, but the family long ago passed out of the community, and even the name applied to the stream did not stick. The last property passed out of the hands of the family on June 6, 1846, when Elizabeth Husk, widow of Samuel Husk, and the other heirs, Frederick Husk and Nancy his wife, Isaac Husk and Jane his wife, George Britton and Mary his wife, Samuel Husk and Dorcas his wife, Horatio Britton and Elizabeth his wife, transferred 100 acres to Solomon Bowers." A handwritten copy of a land grant, which is to Frederick Husk, October 9, 1781:

"The Commissioners for Adjusting the Claims to Unpatented Lands and the Corporation of Monongalia, Yohagania of Ohio:

We hereby certify that Frederick Husk is entitled to two hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on Dunkards' Creek adjoining lands claimed by Michal Core to include is improvements made in the year 1770.

Given under our hands this 6th day of March in the 6th Year of the Commonwealth.

On Mar 14 1796, Frederick Husk was a member of the jury of inquest (the first meeting of the court after the records were burned that year). [The Monongalia Story, Vol. II, p. 256]

This is a genealogy of the descendants of this Frederick Husk (or Hust, or Hurst), with particular emphasis on those branches of the family tree closest to the principal compilers, Samuel David Gaston and Geneva Gaston Brown. The information presented here was obtained from countless sources over many years of research. Wherever possible, the original source is documented, but the reader can rest assured that even when a source is not specified, the compilers were highly confident of the accuracy of the information before including it in this collection.

Despite extensive research in more recent years, nothing about the ancestors of the elder Frederick Husk (or Hust, or Hurst) has been discovered. Information on the earliest of his descendants has also been very hard to come by. However, this genealogy is, and always will be, a work in progress, and additional information regarding the early generations, as well as the current one, will be added as it becomes known. Since Elizabeth appeared in the 1830 Census as the head of family, we must assume that Samuel had already died by then.

Died in Confederate prison in Civil War, per various sources. According to Brenton Leon Husk, George W. Husk belonged to Company A, 14th Infantry, and was taken prisoner at Cloyds Mountain, Virginia on May 9th, 1864. Much of this information is confirmed in "Soldiers' Memorial," published April 1865 and cited in the Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram of Nov 24, 1999.

Elizabeth: Some question exists as to her correct first name. Although widely believed to have been Sarah, evidence seems more to indicate Elizabeth. In either event, she was known almost exclusively only by her middle name, Jane. Her name was given as Jane in the 1870 Census, and even her headstone identifies her only as "Jane, wife of Isaac Husk." The death record of Isaac Newton Husk incorrectly lists his parents as Isaac Husk and Jane Whetlatch [sic], confusing his mother with his grandmother, Sarah Whitlatch.

The original charcoal of the widely-distributed formal portrait of the elderly Isaac Husk was handed down to his grandson Walter "Shiner" Husk. Per Shiner's instructions, upon his death in 1993, it was in turn passed down to Isaac's great-grandson Samuel D. Gaston.

In the 1890's Leonard Husk and his family moved to Jackson Co, WV, Leonard later moved to Durbin, Pocahontas Co, WV, where he worked as a logger.^[147]

Excerpted from his obituary: "'Jimmie' was a kind and noble son and brother and will be greatly missed in the home and in the community by all who knew him, for he was always jolly, good-humored and greeted everyone with a song and a smile." Killed in the same accident was a first cousin, William Alexander Husk.

But his West Virginia death certificate specifies his birth as Apr 13 1846 in "Whetzel Co Va," now Wetzel Co, WV. His age at death, given as 82y 0m 18d, conforms to that birth date. But in the death record maintained at Calhoun County, which does not specify a birth date, his age at death is given as 82y 2m 18d, which would put his birth date at Feb 13 1846. The 1900 Census also states his birth date as Apr 1846. Validity of his Wetzel County birthplace is unclear, since all other members of this family are thought to have been born in Greene Co, PA. Husk Family Cemetery, Calhoun Co, WV.⁷³ The second daughter of Isaac & Rachel West Husk, Dorcas Emma Husk Carpenter, died in childbirth with her fourth child, a son Boyd, who also died shortly afterwards. Her three remaining children were taken in by Isaac & Rachel, who raised their three granddaughters as their own children. This left Emma's widower, Lewis Johnson Carpenter, free to marry his wife Emma's first cousin, Eunice Ann Coon (daughter of Isaac's sister Jane), also a recent widow.

Entries for the three oldest household members indicated that Isaac and daughter Cordelia were able to read and write, while Rachel could do neither.

1920 Census, Calhoun Co, WV (Lee District), enumerated on Apr 21 1920 on Richardson Road:

Isaac Husk, 73, farmer; wife Rachel Husk, 71; granddau Violena Carpenter, 13.

Again, Rachel was the only household member unable to read or write.⁴⁰
