Apr- 3-1858,4 [Reports of Sarah Garrett Hart's death date as Apr 3 1850 are incorrect. They are based on a reading of a damaged portion of her headstone, which appeared to bear that date. But the 1850 Census of Doddridge County, enumerated on July 23 1850, shows that she was residing with her husband in the home of their son John. A re-examination of a photograph of the headstone shows that what had appeared to be a zero as the last digit of the year 1850 was more likely the upper portion of an eight, making the death date Apr 3 1858. The lower portion of the headstone has become even more damaged since the photo was taken. No death record was found for her at Doddridge County.], buried in Hart Cemetery, Taylor Drain Rd, Doddridge Co WV,4 [From a photograph, the hand-carved inscription on the fieldstone marker reads: "Garrett, Sarah Hart, the wife of Josiar Hart, died in the yeare of our Lord 1850 April 3." Other sources have given his birth date ranging from ca 1844 to ca 1849, to include the 1900 Census listing his birthdate as Sep 1847, and a family information survey completed by son John W. Hart in 1931 which reported the birth of Andew N. Nutter as Sep 6 1848 in Harrison Co. His birth place was reported in his marriage record as Doddridge Co, but Harrison Co is considered more likely.], d. Marriage records identify her as "Mrs. Sarah E. Nucholes" (previous marriage?), born in Augusta, VA (now Hampshire Co, WV). Birth record of daughter Dalla identifies her as Elizabeth Harland Hart, born in Augusta Co, VA, but Dalla's obituary identifies her as the daughter of "Andy and Martha Nuckles Hart." Dalla's death record identifies her as the daughter of Andy Hart & Martha Muckles [sic]. Birth record of son Alaska identifies her as Sarah E. Harlow Hart, born in Augusta Co, VA, and his death record also identifies her as Sarah Harlow. Based on apparent quality of the records, the latter is believed most accurate of those. But obituary of daughter Etta Wanda Hart Merritt identifies her parents as Andrew and Elizabeth Poole Hart. A death record for a Sarah E. Hart (d. Apr 14 1918) is on file in Doddridge County, age and parents are not listed, cause of death given as "old age."
