Came to present-day West Virginia in 1828 and resided in Wetzel County till 1840, when he and his brother James came to Pleasants County and bought 500 acres on McKim Creek. The farm they established there remained in the family for many years. When he arrived in the region, the land was well covered with woods, and the woods well filled with wild beasts and Indians. Wild game was plenty and neighbors scarce.¹

Isaac Cain and his son William fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. They were both shot at the Battle of Gettysburg, and both were captured when Isaac refused to leave his more severely wounded son. William was taken to a local hospital, where he soon died. Isaac was transported to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he was confined as a Prisoner of War until his death in December 1864.

Point Lookout was the largest Union POW camp and had by far the worst living conditions. Built to accommodate 10,000 prisoners, its population at the end of the war had grown to 22,000. Shelter consisted only of various types of tents, with no barracks to protect the men from the elements. At least 3,584 prisoners died there over a 22-month period. There were only 50 escapes.^[34]

Civil War records on file at the Doddridge County Court House indicate that Josiah [sic] Hart enlisted in the Union Army on Dec 2 1861 and was discharged on Dec 1 1864, with the rank of Private. His unit was Company M, 6th Regiment, West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. His birth was reported as 1829 in Maryland, his death as Feb 14 1909 at Joy, Doddridge Co, and his burial at the Hart Cemetery on the Hart Farm in Joy. Cause of death: pneumonia. His residence was listed as Joy, and his next of kin as J. W. Hart (relationship not indicated), Oxford Route 1, WV.

A death date of Jun 15 1907 was reported by nephew John W. Hart in a W. Guy Tetrick family information survey completed in 1931. Meanwhile, Doddridge County death records (DR Bk 2, p. 64) list a "Juliette Hildman," age 50, married, who died at Summers on June 6, 1909 of TB. Isaac: At time of his death, had been employed for fifteen years as superintendent of W. Brent Maxwell's farm in Doddridge County. He was mis-identified in son Grant's obit as "Isaac A. Hileman." Son Willis' obituary stated that he was survived by sisters Maysel, Maybell and Pearl, and by "one step-sister, Mrs. Jim (Rachel) Leeson, Oxford." This would actually be a half-sister, Rachel S. Pierce, dau of Willis' mother Lucinda Richmond and her second husband Esta Waitman Pierce. Willis' obituary also states that he was predeceased by nine brothers and five sisters, some of whom, it would seem, were probably step-siblings. Isaac's own obituary contained numerous factual errors regarding names and dates.
