There is much confusion regarding the family of Jonathan Bee.  We present our findings with the following caveats:

In the well-researched and highly regarded "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 356, Jonathan is said to have married just once, to "Patsy" Martha Howard in 1817, and to have had the following seven children:

Asa, birth date not given, married Margaret Howard in 1839

Enos, birth date not given, married Mary E. Benson, Martha Mackie, and probably Elizabeth Sherwood in 1852

Hannah, b. ca 1822, no further info

Jane, b. ca 1832, no further info

Mariah, b. ca 1835, no further ino

Richard, b. ca 1841, no further info

William, b. ca 1844, no further info

We have encountered numerous discrepancies and inconsistencies in the records pertaining to this family:  (1) According to her marriage record, Hannah was the daughter of Jonathan and Margaret, not Jonathan and Martha.  (2) We have found that Richard and William were not Jonathan's children, but his grandchildren, apparently orphaned by their parents Asa and Margaret before 1850.  (3) After the 1850 Census, we found no trace of daughter Jane, b. ca 1832.  (4) We found from her marriage record  that Mary Jane Bee, b. ca 1844, was a daughter of Jonathan and Martha, but she does not appear in any census with them and Martha would have been 50 when Mary Jane was born.

1850 Census, Doddridge County, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jul 20 1850:

       Jonathan Bee, 56, b. New Jersey, farmer; Martha, 56, b. Virginia; Hannah, 28; Jane, 18; Mariah, 15; Richard, 9; William, 6.

       Jonathan died in 1858.

1860 Census, Doddridge County, enumerated on Jun 5 1860:

Martha Bee, 55 (sic), was listed in the household of her son Enos, along with her daughters Hannah and Maria.

Richard Bee, 19, was listed in the household of his father's cousin Keziah Bee and her husband Nathan W. Prim.

William Bee, 16, was listed in the household of his father's cousin Eleanor Bee and her husband John Sherwood.

1870 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (New Milton Twp), enumerated on Jul 14 1870:

Arthur Stuttler, 24, farmer; Ella J. Stuttler, 17; Ephraim B. Sherwood, 10; Martha Bee, 77.  All born in Virginia.

(Note:  Martha Bee's husband Jonathan was a brother of Ella's grandfather Amaziah Bee, making Ella Jonathan's great-niece.  Ephraim B. Sherwood was Ella's brother.)

He married[5],[6],2 Sep-25-1817 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[7] Martha "Patsy" Howard, also known as Patsy Howard,2 b. ca 1794 in Virginia,4 (daughter of John Howard), census 1850, 1860, 1870 in Doddridge Co, WV.

                                      Children:

                14.        i.       ASA BEE b. ca 1819.

ii.      HANNAH BEE b. ca 1826 in Preston Co, (W)VA,[8] census 1880 in Freemans Creek District, Lewis Co, WV, resided 1871 in Doddridge Co, WV,8 census 1850, 1860 in Doddridge Co, (W)VA.  She married Sep-17-1871 in Doddridge Co, WV,[9] William Frashuer, census name William Frazier,[10] b. ca 1815 in Harrison Co, (W)VA,[11] (son of Nimrod Freashur and Sudna Childers), census 1880 in Freemans Creek District, Lewis Co, WV, resided 1871 in Lewis Co, WV.8

Based on census records, Hannah was born as early as 1822 or as late as 1832, with her marriage record putting it in between at about 1826.  Although the earliest record appears to be the most reliable, there still remains the conflict that Jonathan married Martha Howard in 1817, and Hannah's mother was reportedly Margaret.

1880 Census, Lewis Co, WV (Freemans Creek District), enumerated on Jun 26 1880:

William Frazier, 68, farmer, suffering from dropsy; wife Hannah, 50; sister-in-law Mariah, 41; nephew Nimrod, 16; nephew William G, 11; nephew Harvey L, 6.

(Note:  The birthplace for everyone was West Virginia.  The birthplace for Hannah's father was New Jersey, and Virginia for her mother, while the birthplace for both of Mariah's parents was listed as New Jersey.  This is at variance from the Virginia birthplace that is found for Mariah's mother in her marriage record and all census records.  It does lend credence, however, to the idea that Hannah was a half-sister to the rest of her father's children.)

                15.        iii.     ENOS BEE b. ca 1827.

iv.     JANE BEE b. ca 1832,4 census 1850 in Doddridge Co, (W)VA.

Aug- 7-1798 near Fetterman, Taylor Co, (W)VA,3,[15],[16] [Minnie Kendall Lowther states his birth as 1798 near Fetterman, in present-day Taylor County WV.  But "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 57, reports it as Aug 7 1798, probably in Gloucester County, NJ.], d.        "He was the first minister of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, on Hughes River, and his ministry had a telling effect on the early history of this branch of the church, which was organized not long after his arrival.  He was a strong advocate of co-education, having no sympathy, whatever, with the idea that was so prevalent at that period 'that woman was amply equipped for the battle of life if she coult only spell and read.'  He taught that woman's influence was the potent factor in shaping the mind of the child, and that, thus, she was in need of the better education; and this teaching had an important bearing on his own family, as three of his daughters were among the early teachers of this vicinity."3

Although Minnie Kendall Lowther in "Ritchie County in History and Romance" (p. 279) states that Alzetta Bee, daughter of Ezekiel Bee & Moria Johnson, died young, and "Ritchie County Cemeteries" reports an undated headstone for Alzetta Bee at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Berea, "Ritchie County Marriages" shows that on Nov 14 1877, Alzetta Bee, 23, born in Doddrige Co, res. Ritchie Co, dau of Ezekiel & Maria, married Robert P. Holbert.  Susie Davis Nicholson's "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," p. 357, reports that Alzetta Bee was born Aug 14 1850, a twin to sister Emeretta.  The 1860 Census of Ritchie County shows Alzetta Bee as a 10-year-old daughter in the household of Ezekiel & Moriah Bee.  No death record has been found for her, but she presumably died before Dec 1881, the date of her husband's remarriage.

8.    Ephraim Bee (3.Asa3, 2.Ephriam2, 1.Thomas1), b. Dec-26-1802 in Salem, Salem Co, NJ,[41] d. Oct-23-1888 at Cabin Run, Doddridge Co, WV,41,[42] buried in Cabin Run Cemetery, Doddridge Co, WV.41

Ephraim Bee played a prominent role in the establishment and early history of Doddridge County and West Union.  He was born in Salem, New Jersey, on December 26, 1802, and he died in Doddridge County at Cabin Run on October 23, 1888.  His parents were Asa Bee and Rhoda Cox.  His father was a Revolutionary War soldier and a Seventh Day Baptist preacher.  His family moved to western Virginia when he was nineteen years old, staying briefly in Preston and Taylor Counties before settling in Salem, Harrison County.

Two years later, Ephraim married Catharine Davis in Salem.  In 1828, they built a log home on Meathouse Fork of Middle Island Creek, now West Union.  They also built an inn at Lewisport (now West Union) below the blockhouse on the Northwestern Turnpike.  It became a very popular stop for travelers and locals alike.  One of those travelers was Joseph H. Diss Debar, designer of the West Virginia State Seal.  He wrote of the excellent quality of food, saying that he had a smoking hot dinner of boiled ham, greens, mashed potatoes, dried peach pie and store tea, all of a quality to be gratefully remembered.  When he settled his bill and learned that the proprietor's name was Bee and observing the number of children playing about, he said that it had never before been his pleasure to dine in a "Bee Hive."  For years afterwards, the inn was known by that name.

Ephraim and Catharine had ten children.  Catharine died in 1852.  The following year Ephraim married Mary Melissa "Polly" Welch, who bore him seven more children.  Ephraim's descendants are still plentiful in Doddridge and surrounding counties.

Ephraim was a blacksmith by trade.  For 35 years, he had a blacksmith shop near the present-day railroad bridge in West Union, making everything from guns to cowbells to augurs.  The first bridge across Middle Island Creek was of hewed logs with a center abutment of stones.  In the great flood of 1835 it was washed away.  In 1842 a contract was awarded to build a new covered bridge.  Ephraim Bee at that time had a hotel and blacksmith shop on what is now known as Blockhouse Hill.  He made all the bolts and bands for the bridge, which was completed in 1843 and stood for the next 107 years as one of the town's most prominent features, until destroyed in the Great Flood of 1950.  Even now, it remains a source of pride to the local citizens.

In addition to his primary business, Ephraim also established a farm, stables, tannery and a horseracing track to enhance his income.  He also served as postmaster and magistrate.  A shrewd land speculator, he owned about 40,000 acres of land.

At the age of 60, he was a Captain of the Doddridge County Militia, which protected the area from roving Confederate forces, horse thieves and outlaws.  Along with Luke Jaco, he was a key member of the Underground Railroad, helping to hide slaves in Jaco Cave on their flight for freedom.

In 1863, with the formation of the new state of West Virginia, Ephraim was elected to represent Doddridge County in the legislature at Wheeling, the first capital.  When a daughter was born to him on January 1st of that year, the same day that President Lincoln signed the statehood proclamation, Ephraim proudly named her West Virginia Bee.  He was re-elected to two more terms and was thus instrumental in the formulation of the new state's first laws.

Another contest that Ephraim won was being named the Ugliest Man in the State of West Virginia.  For that victory, he was awarded a beautiful pocket knife.  However, he was forced to relinquish it a few years later when the State found a man whom it deemed to be even uglier.

According to H. H. Hardesty's History of Doddridge County,  "To the people of Central West Virginia, Ephraim Bee was a personage combining the qualities of a shrewd wit and love of fun, with a keen eye for value in a horse-trade or a deal in land. To the younger generation he has become something of a legend, so great and widespread was his fame."  Ephraim had a reputation as a great story teller and practical joker.  Hardesty wrote: "Lincoln & Bee had more in common than a sense of humor.  They were both long, lean and lanky and with faces that could not be termed handsome by their dearest and closest friends.  They were saved from ugliness by a sense of humor and softened, kindly eyes that lit up and redeemed an otherwise unprepossessing appearance."

"Along this line of having fun, Ephraim established a secret order of his own, called E. Clampus Vitus and with a ritual similar to existing orders.  His goal was to produce a grin where only a grouch had flourished. This order had quite a success, too lengthy to describe here.  It was started at West Union perhaps as early as 1850.  By 1853 it was being introduced to other towns and had won a very considerable following of zealous members."  A report of the activities was recorded in the Weston Herald for Nov. 28, 1953.  ECV has grown to become an active fraternal organization throughout the nation.

A news item in the West Union Record in 1885 stated that "Honorable Ephraim Bee, one of the first settlers in this area & now an old & respected citizen of this county, is dangerously ill at his home on Cabin Run."  He died on October 23, 1888 at age 86, and was buried at Cabin Run Cemetery.

Susie Davis Nicholson, in "Davis - The Settlers of Salem WV," pp. 67-68, lists seven children for this family, omitting Eleanor.  She states:

"There appears to be missing children between the first and second.  This has to be, we think, the family that lost seven children to diphtheria and buried them in a little plot by the stream where Tom's Fork meets Meathouse Fork Creek.  When I was a child, this little cemetery stood just north of the iron bridge that spanned Meathouse Fork.  The bridge was washed away in the flood of 1950 and was replaced by a cement bridge.

"The cemetery was enclosed with a plank fence and was overgrown with weed and brambles.  I well remember the story as told by the Alvin Randolph family, who lived nearby, of how a BEE family had had their children reaped early by the dread disease and had buried them there by the stream.  It is very probably that the nearby Middle Island Cemetery had not yet been established.  The children must have been buried there in the 1830's.  This could have been none other than the children of Amaziah & Rhoda.

"The board fence, briars, brambles and bridge are gone now, and few in the area remember the story of the family's tragic loss.  Sheep graze over the little knoll where a single unmarked stone stands as a sentinel to mark this tragedy of the past."[60]
