Grand Parents

4.  Addison Avery Brown, b. Aug- 1-1881 in Verndale, Wadena Co, MN,[7] d. Jan-13-1954 in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH, buried in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, OH,[8] resided in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH,5 resided 1910-mid1940s in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,5 resided 1900-1910 in Chehalis Co (now Grays Harbor Co), WA,[9],10 resided originally in Verndale, Wadena Co, MN, occupation glass-blower (in WV) and steel mill worker (in OH).5  Federal Census data of Jun 5 1900 identifies Addison Y. [sic] Brown, age 19, residing in Satsop, Chehalis County (now known as Grays Harbor County), Washington as a servant and farm laborer in the household of Edward F. Foster, b. Aug 1862 in Idaho.  Addison's birthdate was given as Aug 1880 [sic], birthplace Minnesota, father's birthplace Massachusetts, mother's birthplace New York.  Edward Foster's wife Mary was shown as born in Apr 1864 in West Virginia.  The Fosters' neighbors were the family of Jasper and Virginia Mowry; they and the oldest five of their seven children were born in West Virginia, the younger two born in Washington.  We must assume that Addison moved from Minnesota to Washington with his father in June 1893.  We can only speculate that it was through the Fosters and/or the Mowrys that he was somehow introduced to Nancy "Babe" Haught and eventually came to West Virginia.  This is supported by the fact that Jasper Mowry appeared in the 1870 Census of Doddridge County (New Milton Twp) as the 9-year-old son of George & Mary Mowry, and that Jasper N. Mowry & Jennie (nickname for Virginia) Knight were married in Doddridge Co on Mar 10 1856.

Census data of April 19 1910 states that he was a 28-year-old laborer living in Montesano Precinct, County of Chehalis (now Grays Harbor County), Washington, with place of birth as Minnesota in 1881, residing as a "hired man" in the household of John C. Smith (age 52, born in Wisconsin) and his wife Jennie C. (age 47, born in West Virginia), and their children.  Addison must have come to West Virginia soon thereafter, as he and Nancy "Babe" Haught were married Dec 20 1910 in West Union, and daughter Waneta was born Oct 23, 1911.  Connection, if any, between that J.C. Smith and the J.C. Smith who operated a funeral home in West Union, is unknown.

1920 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District), enumerated on Jan 3 1920:

      A. A. Brown, 38, b. Minnesota, both parents b. Minnesota, occupation truck-dray driver; wife Babe Brown, 33; step-dau Clella Haught, 15; dau Jaunita Brown, 8; son Vernon A, 2 months.

Stated birthplace of Addison's parents is clearly in error.

1930 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (West Union District), enumerated on Apr 14 1930:

Addison A. Brown, 47, b. Minnesota, both parents b. Minnesota, occupation salesman at feed store, age 26 at first marriage; wife Babe, 43, age 22 at first marriage, b. WV, father b. Pa., mother b. WV; dau Mabel W, 18; son Vernon A, 10; son Armond L, 7.

Again, the stated birthplace of Addison's parents is in error.

In an affidavit dated Aug 21 1935 at Clarksburg WV, regarding establishment of Addison's birthdate, Addison stated that his family had moved to Montesano, Washington when he was about nine years old, that the family Bible had been destroyed in a house fire about three years later, that his mother had died when he was about six years old, that his father had died when he was about 18 years old, and that he had no living siblings.

Addison always told his son Armand that his only living relative not descended from him was a cousin, Edith Maria Weeden, whose address was 10 Guernsey Street, Norwich (Chenango County), NY.  We have since determined that Edith Weeden was the wife of Archer Lewis Weeden (b. Mar 18 1870) (married May 20 1891) and was born Edith Maria Terwilliger in New York on Feb 13 1873, daughter of Andrew Jackson Terwilliger (1829-1904) and Mary Esther Saunders (1842-1919) (married Dec 12 1871).  Census data shows that Mary Esther Sanders was a sister of Almira Sanders, Addison's mother.  It was Edith Maria Weeden who in January 1943 provided an affidavit supporting the filing of Addison's delayed birth certificate in Verndale, Wadena County, Minnesota. He married Dec-20-1910 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[10],[11] Nancy "Babe" Haught.

5.  Nancy "Babe" Haught, b. Jan-19-1884 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[31] [Nancy was always sensitive about her age, and no one in the family was ever sure exactly when she was born.  The official Jan 19 1884 birth date was provided at the time of the delayed recording of her birth record in 1944 and was based principally on the testimony of her sister Rosa.  Age 23 given at time of Dec 1910 marriage would put birth date in 1887, as would age 43 in the 1930 Census.  SSDI reports birth date as Jan 19 1885, while her headstone shows her birth date as Jan 19 1889, also incorrect.  A birth date of Jan 1882 was given in the 1900 Census, correctly placing her between older sister Icy Dell (listed as b. Jul 1880) and younger brother John Homer (b. Nov 1883).  An analysis of the 1900 Census data for that household leads to the conclusion that Nancy and siblings Elizabeth, Icy & Homer seem to have shifted their birthdates in later years to make themselves appear a few years younger than they were.  In Nancy's case, the shift seems to have occurred at about the time of the 1910 Census (when she was only 4 years older than in the 1900 Census), as her given age stayed fairly consistent after that.], d. Sep-23-1977 in Coshocton, Coshocton Co, OH,5,18 buried in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown, OH,[32] resided (nursing home) in Coshocton, Coshocton Co, OH,5,[33] resided formerly in Youngstown, Mahoning Co, OH,5,18 resided originally in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV.5

6.  Ira Dow Gaston, b. Dec-31-1894 in Oxford, Doddridge Co, WV,5 d. Jul-26-1973 in Washington Co, OH,5 buried in Cabin Run Cemetery, Doddridge Co, WV,[34] [Headstone gives the birthdate of 1895, which is incorrect.], occupation oil and gas company.5  Dow Gaston, as he was known, retired from the Equitable Gas Company in 1949 with 28 years of service.  He was a member of the Cabin Run Methodist Church; the Friendship Lodge No. 56 A.F. and A.M., and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 56, both of West Union; the Clarksburg Lodge of Perfection; Clarksburg Chapter of Rose Croix; Wheeling Council of Kadosh; and Wheeling Consistory.  [Obit]   He served on the Doddridge County Board of Education.  [West Virginia Blue Book, 1948, p. 378 & 495]

The grocery store located next to the family home on Oxford Road at Cabin Run was built in 1949, largely from wood salvaged from an abandoned one-room school building.  The store was operated by Ira Dow Gaston and family until shortly before his death.  The store and home then stood vacant until June 1974, when daughter Geneva and her husband Armand Brown moved from Ohio to reside and operate the store.  The store was closed for the last time on May 31 1985, and the building was dismantled in July 1993, with much of its original wood salvaged for reuse. He married Apr-26-1921 in West Union, Doddridge Co, WV,[35] Ida Opal Husk.

He married (1) Oct-28-1950 at Greenwood, Doddridge Co, WV,[39] divorced5 Doris May Cross, b. Mar-29-1932 in Ritchie Co, WV,42,8 d. Great Grand Parents

8.  Ammi Almanzia Brown, also known as Adli Brown, b. Sep-13-1829 in Boston, MA,[45] d. Jun-20-1899 in Washington State,[46],[47] [probably at the Washington Soldiers Home at Orting, Pierce County, WA], buried in Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery, Orting, Pierce Co, WA,53 resided from May 1897 in Orting, Pierce Co, WA,54 [Washington Soldiers Home], resided Jun 1893 - May 1897 in Montesano, Chehalis (now Grays Harbor) Co, WA, resided 1885, 1890 in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, MN,[48] resided 1881 in Verndale, Wadena Co, MN,[49] census 1870 in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY, resided 1869 in New Berlin, Chenango Co, NY,[50] resided 1862 in Palmyra, Jefferson Co, WI,[51] census 1860 in Crawford Co, WI, census 1840 in Burlington, Otsego Co, NY, occupation carpenter,55,56 military Aug-22-1862 - Jul-22-1865 Civil War (Pvt, Co A, 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery).[52]  Very little has been found regarding Ammi Almanzia Brown and wife Almira Sanders, possibly also known as Rachel Almira Saunders.  It is not known for sure when or where they were married or when they moved to Minnesota.  Born in Massachusetts in 1829, Ammi was found in the 1840 Census with his parents and brother residing in Burlington, Otsego Co, NY.  He was next found in the 1860 Census residing in Crawford Co, Wisconsin, with his first wife and their two children.  (Further evidence of this first marriage is his 1898 application to the Washington Soldiers Home, on which he stated that he had two children, ages 44 and 16.)  He was a resident of Palmyra, Wisconsin in Aug 1862 when he entered military service for the Civil War.  Ammi's and Almira's marriage must have occurred upon Ammi's return from Civil War duties, as they are found together in the 1870 Census in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY.  They were next found in the 1885 Census of Wadena Co, Minnesota, with son Addison.  If Almira died in about 1888, as son Addison twice testified, there is some evidence that Ammi may have remarried, as his marital status was listed as married on his Feb 1898 application to the Washington Soldiers Home.  But on  his March 1899 application to the soldiers home, his entry for marital status was "She has left me, I do not know where she is."  Circumstances taking Ammi from Minnesota to the state of Washington in 1893 are also unknown.

Addison Avery Brown always gave his parents' names as Ammi Almanzia Brown and Almira Saunders, and official records support that.  But Addison's obituary identified his parents as Adli Brown and Rachel Sanders.  The basis for that information is not known.

Addison's birth certificate, which was not registered until 1943 when he was a longtime resident of Doddridge County, WV, identified his father as Ammi Almanzia Brown, age 54 at the time of Addison's 1881 birth, born in Massachusetts, occupation carpenter; and his mother as Almira Saunders Brown, age 39 at time of Addison's birth, born in New York.  Information supporting the delayed filing was provided in affidavit by Edith Maria Weeden, 20 Brown Avenue, Norwich, Chenango County, NY, who was identified as Addison's cousin.  Addison always told his son Armand that Edith was Addison's only living relative outside the immediate family.

Civil War Service Records reflect that Ammi A. Brown, a resident of Palmyra, Wisconsin, served as a Private with Co A of the Wisconsin 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment from Aug 1862 to Jun 1865.  Applications to the Washington Soldiers Home in 1897, 1898 and 1899 show this to be the same Ammi A. Brown, born Sep 13 1829 in Boston MA, carpenter by trade, who was the husband of Almira and the father of Addison.  (Confusingly, there was another Ammi A. Brown, a resident of Kalamazoo Co, MI, who served as a Quartermaster Sergeant with Co L of the Michigan 2nd Cavalry Regiment, enlisting at age 21 on Oct 2 1861, discharged on Oct 22 1864.)

1840 Census, Burlington, Otsego Co, New York:

      Household of Ammi T. Brown

1 male age 40-50  (this would be Ammi T. Brown, who we know from the 1870 Census was born about 1799)

      1 male age 10-15  (i.e., Ammi A. Brown, b. 1829)

      1 male age 5-10

      1 female age 40-50

No record of Ammi Brown was found in any 1850 Census.

      1860 Census, Crawford Co, Wisconsin:

Ami Brown, 30, b. New York, occupation (blank); Deborah, 28, b. New York; Ida, 6, b. New York; Edwin, 2, b. Wisconsin.

Although our Ammi Brown was not born in New York, he did live there before coming to Wisconsin.   Despite the discrepancy, this appears to be our Ammi with his first wife and their children (Edwin later appears with him in the 1870 Census).  Ammi was a resident of Wisconsin when he entered the military in 1862.

1870 Census, town of Guilford, Chenango Co, NY:

Ami Brown, 39, b. Massachusetts, occup house carpenter; Almira Brown, 28, b. New York; Edwin Brown, 11, b. Wisconsin; Ami Brown, 71, b. Connecticut, occup carpenter & joiner.

Although relationships are not stated, it would appear that the elder Ammi is the father of the younger, who in turn is the father of Edwin.  Based on the earlier census, Edwin's mother was Deborah, not Almira.  No entry for this Edwin Brown was found in any subsequent census.

No entry for Ammi Brown was found in the 1880 Census, although we know he was in Minnesota for the birth of son Addison in 1881.

The 1880 Census of Minnesota lists in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, Albert A. Brown, age 40, carpenter, born in New York; and Almira Brown, age 35, his wife, born in New York, her father born in Connecticut, and her mother born in New York.  Despite the discrepancies, the possibility cannot be discounted that this is the couple in question.  The same Census shows Charles W. Brown, age 35, born in New York, father born in Connecticut, mother born in New York.  Given ages and locations, these two Browns could be brothers or other close relatives.

The 1885 Census of Minnesota lists in Aldrich Twp, Wadena County, A. A. Brown, age 53, born in Massachusetts; Almira Brown, age 41, born in New York; and Addison (misspelled Adison), age 3, born in Minnesota.

Minnesota Land Records, Document 16156, St. Cloud Land Office, on file at U.S. Bureau of Land Management, show that Ammi A. Brown purchased 80 acres of land on Dec 16 1890, with the following legal description:  Aliquot Parts S1/2SE, Base Line 5TH PM, Fractional Section No, Township 134 N, Range 34 W, Section # 4.

In "The Famous & Not So Famous," published by the Verndale Historical Society in 1987, it is noted that the relationship between the many Brown families who settled there has not been entirely determined.  Of the many pages devoted to settlers of the Brown surname, only the following three entries appear regarding this one:  (1) "Architect and Builder.  I am prepared to take contracts for erecting buildings of all kinds.  Plans and specifications furnished on short notice.  Stair building a specialty."  [Wadena County Tribune, Dec 5 1878, attributed to A. A. Brown]  (2) "A. A. Brown has erected a barn near Verndale."  [Verndale Journal, Dec 26 1879]  (3) "The A. A. Brown Furniture, 1882, is mentioned in 'Bartlett Township History,' Volume I."  It is noted that there were two A. A. Browns, Ammi Almanzia and Albert A., who were carpenters and residing in Verndale at that time.

Based strictly on the two Censuses and the birth certificate, Ammi would have been born either ca 1840, ca 1832 (most likely), or ca 1827; but entries on his applications to the Washington Soldiers' Home consistently and specifically state his birth date as Sep 13 1829.  No written record of his middle name, Almanzia, has been found, and it is known to us only from the recollection of his grandson Armand.  Ammi Almanzia Brown was thought by family lore to have died at age 74 of apoplexy, although son Addison, born in 1881, recalled that he was about 18 at the time of his father's death, which would have been shortly after Ammi's last admission to the Washington Soldiers' Home in Orting, Pierce Co, WA in 1899.  The recent discovery of his grave at the Washington Soldiers Home Cemetery in Orting shows that Ammi Brown's death occurred on Jun 20 1899. He married[53] (1) Deborah ___, b. ca 1832 in New York,60 census 1860 in Crawford Co, WI.  He married55,5 (2) Almira Sanders, also known as Rachel Almira Sanders,41 b. ca 1843 in New York,55 resided 1885 in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, MN,[54] census 1870 in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY, census 1850, 1860 in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY.

9.  Almira Sanders, also known as Rachel Almira Sanders,41 b. ca 1843 in New York,55 resided 1885 in Aldrich Twp, Wadena Co, MN,61 census 1870 in Guilford, Chenango Co, NY, census 1850, 1860 in Norwich, Chenango Co, NY.  Addison Avery Brown always gave his mother's name as Almira Saunders and stated that she was one-half American Indian.  But information provided at his funeral identified his mother as Rachel Sanders.  Her birth was in New York sometime between 1840 and 1844, based on the following:   Age 9 at 1850 Census would put it in about 1841, age 10 at 1860 Census would put it in about 1840, age 41 at 1885 Census would put it in about 1844, and Addison's birth certificate gives her age at his birth as 39, putting her birth in about 1842.

She was with her parents and siblings in the 1850 and 1860 censuses of Norwich, Chenango Co, NY, and she was with husband Ammi (and his father and son from a previous marriage) in the 1870 Census of Guilford, Chenango Co, NY.

Almira was not found in the Census of 1880.  That year's census of  Wadena County, Minnesota, lists an Almira as the wife of Albert A. Brown, giving her age as 35 (b. ca 1845) and reports her father's birthplace as Connecticut, and her mother's as New York.  Despite the similarities in names and locations, this does not appear to be the same couple.

The 1885 Minnesota Census places her in the household of A. A. Brown with son Addison and identifies her as Almira and gives her age as 41 (b. ca 1844), birthplace New York.

No entry for her was found in the 1900 or subsequent censuses.

In an affidavit filed by son Addison in 1935 to establish his date of birth, he stated that his mother had died when he was about age six.  This would put her death in about 1887 or 1888.  In 1915, in an application for membership in the Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benificiary society, Addison stated that his mother died at age 44 of "inflammation of bowels."  This would also put her death in about 1888.  One question on that application was "Which do you resemble in general characteristics, father or mother?," to which Addison stated that it was his mother.  This is noteworthy because Addison did have certain facial characteristics associated with American Indians.  But a funeral card found in family papers identified the deceased as Rachel A. Brown, died Feb 1 1904, age 53y 10m 25d, location not given.  Based on age at death, the birth date would be Mar 7 1850.  We have not been able to verify the identity of that Rachel A. Brown.

Thus, there is still great uncertainty as to the exact identity and birth/death dates of the wife of Ammi Brown and the mother of Addison.  It does appear likely, however, that her parents were Henry J. Sanders and Olive Mowry.  If Almira died in 1887 or 1888 as stated by Addison, the location would likely have been in Minnesota, since she was there in 1885, husband Ammi is known from a land purchase to have been there in 1890, and his move to Washington State occurred in 1893.  But if she died in 1904 as suggested by the funeral card, the location could have been Washington (if she accompanied Ammi there), Minnesota (if she stayed behind), New York (if she returned to her family still residing at her birthplace), or somewhere else.
