NOTE: Although John & Caroline's son William had been born about three weeks before this enumeration, he was not included in this census because enumerators were instructed on the form to enter the "name of every person whose place of abode on the first day of June, 1870, was in this family."

1880 Census, Tyler Co, WV (McElroy District), enumerated on Jun 21 1880:
Caroline Spencer, 38, widowed, cannot read/write; son Richard T, 19, farm laborer; dau Rebeca A, 14, cannot read/write; dau Samantha L, 12, attended school within the year, cannot write; son William W, 9, attended school.
