Notes for: Adaline Emily Jane Cottrill

Most of the information pertaining to John McKeown and his wife was obtained from their marriage record. The handwritten entry was barely legible, resulting in some uncertainty in the data, represented here by question marks. John McKeown was identified as a farmer, age 29 (?), born in Harrison County, VA (now West Virginia), the son of Patrick (?) and Mary McKeown. His bride was identified as Adaline E. J. Cottrill, age 21 (?), born in Harrison County, VA, the daughter of (father illegible) and Elizabeth (?) Cottrill. Since Fannie Bird McKeown's parents were clearly identified as John McKeown & Emily Cottrill and the marriage took place just nine years before Fannie's birth, it is assumed that this is the same couple and that the initial "E" was for Emily, the name by which she was apparently more commonly known. The marriage took place on May 29 (or 28 ?), 1865. Based on the foregoing, Emily was born around 1844 and John was born around 1836. Harrison County death records show a John McKown [sic], a married man who died of consumption on March 21 1881, aged 46. This would put his birth at around 1835 and makes it nearly certain that this is the same John McKeown. No record of either of their births was found in Harrison County.
