Notes for: Elijah W. Summers

From obituary of Elijah W. Summers:

"For half a century, the family was prominently identified with the public affairs of the county. The deceased was postmaster at Summers from the time the office was established until he left the old home in South West some three years ago. He served his district 16 years as Justice of the Peace and his county six years as a member of the County Court. His son U. Grant Summers ranks with the most popular and accommodating officials Doddridge County has ever had, with a splendid record of four years in the Sheriff's office as deputy for Joseph Freeman and 12 years as County Clerk; and J. Porter Summers, former deputy clerk under U. G. Summers, is one of the finest office men in this section of West Virginia. For many years the deceased was engaged in the mercantile business at Summers, and the old home was noted for its hospitality to all who passed that way, and was long a favorite stopping place for country traveling men."

He was predeceased by two sons and two daughters, not identified in obituary. The obituary copy from which this was taken was incomplete and not fully legible.
