Notes for: Harvey Smith
After the death of Ivah Jane Gaston, Harvey Smith married Virginia Elliott (who in turn married Ernest Allman after Harvey's death). Harvey served in the Civil War Aug 1862 to Jun 1865 as a Private in Co A, 14th W.Va. Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On May 9 1864, while aiding his wounded cousin Thomas J. Fleming, Harvey Smith was captured at Cloyds Mountain, Virginia. He was imprisoned at Andersonville, Georgia for 6 months 20 days until paroled on Nov 25 1864. He was subsequently hospitalized at Mower U.S. Army Hospital in Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, for the remainder of his enlistment. Suffering from "disease of the eyes" according to the 1890 Veterans Survey, he filed for an invalid's pension on Aug 31 1865.
