Notes for: John E. Kinney

Obituary:

John E. Kinney was born in Perry Co., OH, July 6, 1841, and died at his home in Grant District, Dodd. Co., West Virginia Aug.22, 1924, aged 83 years, 1 month, & 19 days.
Earley in life, he with his parents, moved to Green Co., PA, and while a boy, removed to Doddridge Co., Virginia, now West Virginia, and has resided here continuously for more than sixty-five years. He was united in marriage Oct. 13, 1860 to Miss Sarah E. Sandy, and to this union were born four children: Mary Jane, of Canton, West Virginia; James W., of Shirley, West Virginia; Mrs. Josephine Chapman, of Smithton, West Virginia, and Mrs. Susan Allen, of Ragans Run, Dodd. Co. Death claimed this companion July 29, 1871. On March 17, 1872, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Susanna J. Finley and to this union were born four children: Alice Victoria, of Canton; Homer of Terra Alta; Mrs. Ida May Knight, of Goodrich Kansas, and Mrs. Anna Underwood of Wilbur, Tyler Co. Besides the eight named children there remain to mourn their loss, his wife, two step-daughters: Mrs. Bertha Underwood, of Shirley and Mrs. Mary Shrader, of Ragans Run; Sixteen grand-children, twelve great grand-children, ten step grand-children, and seventeen step great grand-children. On December 4, 1861, he left his home in response to Lincoln's call for volunteers and enlisted in Co. M of the Sixth West Va., infantry and gave three years of srvices to his country. "Uncle" John, as all his neighbors called him, knew the toils and privations of the pioneers. "When his father and family came to Doddridge County, they had to cut a road through the forest from Big Flint to Nutters Fork to get their wagons to their destination. His home has always been noted for its hospitality. His hand and heart open to every needy cause. He prospered and yet he was the same unassuming, kind, accommodating gentleman. For several years Uncle John has been deprived of his health, but through all his sickness he has maintained his cheerful, optimistic disposition. Funeral services were conducted at the Shirley U. B. Church on August 27th by Rev. O.H. Carder, Pastor of the Church, and interment was made in the Shirley Cemetery. C,S. Pease was the Funeral Director in charge.
