Notes for: Hugh Gaston

Birth place appears in "History of the Upper Ohio Valley" (p. 146) as Ireland, which is considered incorrect, as grandfather Hugh Gaston emigrated from there in about 1720. Anna Reger Gaston reports it unequivocally as Somerset Co, NJ. Hugh Gaston resided in Bedminster Twp, Somerset Co, NJ in 1787. According to Hanna's "Ohio Valley Genealogies," p. 44, in about 1795-1799, Hugh moved to Washington County & Lycoming County, and then to western Pennsylvania & Ohio. But the date of his departure from New Jersey is considered suspect, since the birthplace of his older children, born before 1795, is shown in census records not as New Jersey, but as Pennsylvania. Hugh Gaston and Grace Gaston were second cousins, as both were great-grandchildren of John Gaston (b. 1645 in Scotland).
