Notes for: Cassa Ann Nutter
It has been incorrectly reported by other researchers that Cassa Ann Nutter's husband was C. W. Stewart. But marriage and census records show that Cassa Ann Nutter, daughter of John C. Nutter and Emily Vincent, was married first to Andrew Jackson Adams, and then to George H. McQuain. The wife of G. W. Stewart was instead Cassandra (aka Cassa or Cassie) Nutter, b. ca 1845 in Ritchie Co, daughter of John Nutter and Mary Mounts, who later married Enoch N. Hobbs.
1860 Census, Doddridge Co, Virginia (now West Virginia), enumerated on Jul 7 1860:
A. J. Adams (male), 27, farmer; Cassa, 25; S. T. (male), 2.
1870 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest Twp), enumerated on Sep 2 1870:
Cassa A. Adams, 37; Salathiel T, 12.
1880 Census, Doddridge Co, WV (Southwest District), enumerated on Jun 4 1880:
Cassa Adams, 45; son Selathiel T, 22, farmer; wife Suseanna, 20; son Walker S, 3.
No entry was found in the 1900 Census for Cassa or for her second husband, George H. McQuain. Minnie Kendall Lowther's "History of Ritchie County," p. 236, reports that Cassa married and moved to Ohio and had died prior to that book's 1911 publication. But no Ohio connection has been found for her or either of her husbands, and it is possible that Cassa Nutter was confused with Cassandra "Cassie" Nutter, who did marry and move to Ohio.
