Notes for: Joseph Israel Vincent

In 1884, Joseph Israel Vincent was ordained a minister of the Methodist Protestant Church. He served the Church for 42 years, establishing several new churches in central West Virginia. The Vincent Memorial Methodist Church in Nutters Fort, Clarksburg, WV, was named for him, its founder. The church, then known as Vincent Chapel Protestant Church, was dedicated in 1908 at its current location on Indiana Avenue. In 1925, the church underwent its first renovations when members enlarged the sanctuary. In 1939, the name was changed to Vincent Memorial Methodist Church. Legend has it that Rev. Vincent did not believe in idleness and was known to have his sons clear the stones from a garden patch and then scatter them out again so as to keep them busy.
