But death certificate specifies birth date as Jun 7 1852. His death certificate also identifies his mother not as his father's second wife Elizabeth, but as Amanda Washburn, Elizabeth's daughter from a previous marriage to Isaac Washburn. This is consistent with the ages of Elizabeth (51) and Amanda (27) at the time of Marion's birth. Amanda never married, so she presumably remained in the Gaston home. The relationships projected to the public are not known, but since Marion's surname was Gaston, it is assumed that he was raised as the son of Hugh and Elizabeth, with his actual biological mother appearing to others as his stepsister. Stated another way, the Elizabeth Washburn who married Hugh Gaston was born Elizabeth King, she was the widow of Isaac Washburn by whom she had a daughter Amanda, and Marion Gaston, though legally and to all appearances the son of Hugh and Elizabeth, was biologically the son of Hugh and Amanda.
