He became a remarkably skilled workman and was for many years employed by the B. & O. railway company, especially during the period when the tunnels were being constructed through to Parkersburg." Note (3) Joined for duty in Grafton on Sep 16 1864. Mustered in on Sep 19 1864 in Grafton to the new Co G, 6th W.Va. Cavalry. He was appointed as a Blacksmith on Sep 18 1864, before mustering in. On Dec 4 1864, at New Creek, WVa, he was missing from the company muster roll. Conflicting entries in his military records indicate status as either Missing in Action or Absent Without Leave. His obituary states that he "was captured at New Creek, was in the command of Captain Mike Donahoe, and was honorably discharged May 19, 1865."
